Make $178.75 per Hour: You Write It, They Sell It.

I increased my prices, and it was worth it.

Yesterday, I earned $178.75 for an article that took me one hour to write. I’ll cut to the chase and share that I charge 10 cents per word. My experience and tools allow me to produce content at a rapid rate, but anyone can do it. Here’s How.

This New Income Stream

I didn’t know that I was ever going to sell articles, myself. In fact, last year, I spent $30,000 on content for my various websites. I stumbled upon this new income stream (and content investment savings) through inspiration while coaching a client.

I was working with a very talented writer that was interested in additional ways to earn money as a writer. She had a growing business and was interested in diversifying, rather than only working with one or two clients.

I asked her if she had heard that there were places to sell content online, and she had. Yet, she had stepped away from those platforms as they weren’t producing enough income for her.

I guided her back to a content creation website where I was buying content. Because I wanted to learn how to use the platform, I set up an account as a writer and added my first 10 articles.

I priced them rather cheap and sold a couple very quickly.

Now, I was inspired.

Raising My Rates

While there were not a lot of articles selling on this specific platform, I decided to make the most of it. I read their terms and services and quickly realized that they suggested 10 cents per word, although many writers were only charging 5 cents.

I decided to focus on long-form content, and charge the maximum suggested because I’m also working on many other things. I knew that if I could produce quality content quickly, I could some additional money. And so I did.

The next day, I raised my rates to $.10/word and within two weeks, I had sold two articles at that rate.

This particular company takes 35% of the sale. In order to make $178.35, I sold an article for $275. It was around 2750 words and was based on a popular software many people use today. Comprehensive guides are popular.

While many writers are discounting their work, and producing as much as they can, as fast as they can, I prefer to work less and make more.

Popular Topics

While I’m only focused on marketing-style blogs today, I have noticed that there are other topics that sell well.

These are:

  • Personal Finance
  • Home Improvement
  • Nutrition
  • Fitness
  • Holidays
  • Careers
  • and others

Freelance Writing Opportunities

The more I dive into this, and coach others on monetizing their creative endeavors, I realize how much more opportunity there is in today’s digital, gig work, freelance economy.

There are many people that are looking for quality content and are willing to pay a premium for it. If you’re a writer, I urge you to explore this avenue. There is room for anyone who is willing to produce quality work, at a fair price.

From platforms where you can earn revenue share (like Medium), or affiliate income (like your own blog), freelance writing (like on Upwork, Fiverr, and content mills), or even ghostwriting (where you’re the “behind the scenes” writer for someone else), there are many options for writers today.

The more I write, the more inspired I become. Not just because of the financial opportunity that’s available, but because I genuinely enjoy it. It’s a joy to see my words help people in some way, and to be able to provide value through my work.

Regardless of your writing experience or skill level, there is an opportunity for you to sell your content. As the economy shifts and more people are looking for quality content (at a fair price), don’t be afraid to explore new ways to make money as a writer. You may be surprised at what’s possible.

My Tools

I use Jasper as an AI writing assistant. (I have a blog about Jasper, here)

While he doesn’t write the blog for me, he helps me research and outlines my articles quickly and easily. I highly recommend him if you’re looking for a tool to help with your writing.

Read everything I write (and thousands of other writers on Medium). Your membership directly supports me and other writers you read. You’ll also get full access to every story on Medium. Join here
